Yellowknife Aurora Capitol of Canada

The capital of Canada's Northwest Territories, Yellowknife is located directly under the Aurora Oval,
a narrow band encircling the polar reaches of the globe in which the mysterious green light of
the Aurora Borealis are at their most brilliant.  Coupled with its clear cold nights, this favorable
geographic location makes
Yellowknife consistently one of the best places in the world for Aurora viewing.

From our strategically located a few kilometers out of town and far from any man-made light,
our guests experience dramatically across the night sky.  The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights,
are actually giant electrical storms formed by solar flares from the sun reacting with the earth's magnetic field.
Although they are usually about 100-500 kilometers above the earth's upper atmosphere,
up here in
Canada's north, our guests often feel that they can reach out and touch them.

City of Yellowknife

Located on the northern shores of Great Slave Lake (the tenth largest lake in the world)Yellowknife is the capital
of the
Northwest Territories and the most northerly city in Canada. On April 1, 1999 the NWT split into two new territories
along east-west lines,
Northwest Territories and Nunavut Territory.  Although these two territories comprise about 1/3 of
Canada land and sea mass, their population are less than 70,000, of whom about 22,000 live in Yellowknife.

From the 1700s until well into this century, the historic fur trade dominated the economy of
Yellowknife.  Following the
discovery of gold in the early 1930s, prospectors and miners began settling the town, and mining has remained the town's
major industry to this day.  The two gold mines started in the 30s
are now closed, and North America's first diamond
mine is now in operation north of the city.
